Black Owned Ketchup & Sauces featuring G. Hughes
If you know me personally, then you know just how much I love food. In college, I had dreams of becoming a food journalist and traveling the world like Anthony Bourdain (may he rest in peace). After graduating I hit a major set back in that goal as I battled horrible digestive issues that took years to diagnose as a gluten sensitivity. However, I’m happy to say that the gluten free selections in grocery stores and restaurants have drastically improved and I’m back to exploring food once again.
And you know what’s better than gluten free? Gluten free and sugar free. Well, when it comes to sauces and such that it is. I find it absolutely ridiculous how much sugar is added to our foods. For reference 4 grams of sugar equals one teaspoon and that’s considered to be one serving. Compare that to your favorite beverage or pasta sauce. I’ll wait… EXACTLY! I told you it was wild.
Transparency moment: I first discovered and tried out this brand of ketchup back in July 2020. It was during the time everybody and their mama was supporting Black owned brands. Why did it take me almost a year to post these pictures and my review? I don’t even have a good excuse other than I was just trying to keep sane during the peak of the pandemic.
Anywho, let’s get on to focusing on G. Hughes’ Sugar Free Ketchup…
As soon as I picked up the bottle I was sold. It’s in a glass bottle y’all which means easy to recycle or reuse if that’s your thing. I also lucked out being that this was the very last bottle on the shelf. I searched for the brand’s line of barbecue sauces and salad dressings but to no avail. Last summer there was the option to purchase directly from the site, but as of today that option has been removed. I plan to visit different grocery stores in my area in an attempt to try more of the line. That Asian Miso salad dressing and Caribbean Jerk wing sauce have my name written all over them!
Now how does this ketchup compare to that other well-known brand you grew up on as a kid? Honestly, other than being a little “lighter'“ in terms of mouth feel, I would say it’s a winner. My toddler even ate her share of fries with a bit of G. Hughes’ ketchup and she’s not really much of a condiment person.
And the ingredient list! I love when something taste great and I can pronounce everything that went into it.
But as I always say, don’t take my word for it. Give it a try and let me know what you think. There is a store locator on the brand’s website which helped me in my initial search.
Happy Eating!
